Antrim County is Hiring a Lead Dispatcher Near Bellaire, MI

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Lead Dispatcher must follow directions from Antrim County Transportation (ACT) Director. They are responsible for coordinating requests for transportation with available busses in the most efficient and effective manner possible. Dispatchers must use 2-way radios to communicate with drivers and proved detailed sequential instructions to pick-up and drop-off passengers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. During stressful situations, they are required to remain calm and courteous. Dispatchers must always present a positive image to the public. The Lead Dispatcher reports directly to the Director. Beginning hourly rate of $17.19/hr plus $1.25/hr for functioning as Lead Dispatcher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Works in conjunction with Agency Director and Head Mechanic.

2. Ability to strictly adhere to agency policies, procedures, and training programs.

3. Assist Management with training new hires and re-training existing staff.

4. Demonstrate professionalism and image as a transit professional.

5. Serve as a mentor for staff and set an example for others to follow.

6. Maintain a thorough knowledge of ACT operations and agency policies.

7. Serve as a reference person and provides guidance to the drivers out in-the-field.

8. Assist the Agency Director with other assignments as needed.

9. Pass periodic, unannounced “random” drug tests after employment begins.

10. Successful completion of all training and testing to obtain necessary CDL with Passenger Endorsement preferred.

11. Comply with all Michigan traffic laws pertaining to busses as well as general traffic laws.

12. Safely maneuver and control any ACT bus in all types of road, traffic, and weather conditions.

13. Effectively and efficiently navigate all roads covered by ACT.

14. Maintain confidentiality concerning ACT operations and clients.

15. Immediately report all incidents and accidents to the Agency Director.

16. Communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.

17. Work effectively with persons of all age groups and all disabilities.

18. Assign bus drivers to pick up customers that call dispatch center for a ride in an unbiased, professional manner.

19. Use 2-way radios to communicate with drivers & provide detailed instructions to pick-up & drop-off passengers.

20. Effectively use “10-Code” 2-way radio procedures & professional radio etiquette to communicate with drivers.

21. Record passenger requests, schedule appropriate transportation, and maintain a legible dispatch log.

22. Accurately account for fare box cash receipts and prepare bank deposits.

23. Reconcile daily fare box cash receipts with driver logs and prepare daily cash activity summaries.

24. Handle and record over-the-counter cash sales of bus tickets and passes.

25. Prepare written daily and monthly mileage, gasoline usage, and ridership activity summaries.

26. Substitute as a Driver when needed and physically load passengers with wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment onto bus lift and secure them on board, as well as, assist ambulatory passengers on/off bus as necessary. Physical maneuvers required may include walking, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, and pulling.

27. When driving do a thorough federally mandated Pre-trip inspection of assigned bus to assure safe operation.

28. Manage all emergencies and other stressful situations in a calm and courteous manner.

29. Successfully complete all ACT training programs implemented by ACT.

30. Must perform any other duties as assigned.

31. Ability to use computer dispatch system (PC Trans).

32. Draft driver schedule weekly for Director review.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

a). Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

b). Michigan CDL Type C with Passenger Endorsement preferred.

c). Any combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

a). Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to schedule.

b). Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

c). Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

d). Ability to establish effective working relationships.

e). Ability to properly handle money.

f). Ability to perform multiple tasks at the same time.

g). Mental and Physical ability to perform the job.

h). Ability to maintain calm disposition during stressful situations.

i). Attendance and punctuality is of major importance in performing these duties.

j). Knowledge of Antrim County area.

k). Must have a satisfactory driving record.

l). Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.

m). Leadership abilities are necessary.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:

Computer; telephone; copier; fax; calculator; two-way radio; drive public transportation vehicle when required.

The noise level in the office environment is usually quiet or moderate and approximates that of a standard business office with equipment running. The noise level in the bus environment is usually moderate or occasionally loud and approximates that of a public transit bus with equipment running.

Formal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview, driver’s license record check, criminal background check, physical examination and drug test as required by the rules and regulations of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and reference check; job related tests may be required.
